FAQs

Is painless dentistry really possible?

Modern dentistry has advanced significantly, making most treatments far more comfortable than many people expect. At Pain Free Dentist Sydney, we use gentle techniques, effective local anaesthesia, modern technology and, where appropriate, sedation options to help minimise discomfort. Our focus is to ensure you feel relaxed, informed and comfortable throughout your visit.

I have severe dental anxiety. Can you help?

Absolutely. Dental anxiety is very common, and we regularly care for patients who have avoided the dentist for many years due to fear or previous negative experiences. We take the time to understand your concerns, explain each step of your treatment and tailor your care to your comfort level.

What sedation options do you offer?

We offer a range of options depending on your needs and the complexity of your treatment, including:

  • Oral sedation

  • IV sedation administered by a qualified sedationist

  • Penthrox (Green Whistle) for suitable procedures

  • Gentle local anaesthetic techniques

During your consultation, we'll discuss which option is most appropriate for you.

Will I feel pain during treatment?

Our goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible. Before starting treatment, we ensure the area is thoroughly numb. We also check regularly throughout the procedure to make sure you remain comfortable and can stop at any time if you need a break.

I have a fear of needles. What can you do?

Many patients are concerned about injections. We use careful injection techniques, topical numbing gel before administering local anaesthetic, and can discuss sedation options for patients with significant needle anxiety.

I've avoided the dentist for years. Will I be judged?

Not at all. We understand that many people delay dental care because of anxiety, previous experiences or life circumstances. Our role is to help you move forward without judgement and develop a treatment plan that suits your goals and budget.

Can I have multiple treatments completed in one appointment?

Yes. For suitable patients, sedation allows several procedures to be completed during a single visit. This can reduce the number of appointments required and minimise the stress of returning multiple times.

Do you offer sleep dentistry?

Yes. We provide IV sedation for patients undergoing more complex procedures or those with significant dental anxiety. Although commonly referred to as "sleep dentistry," IV sedation places you in a deeply relaxed state while you continue to breathe independently and can respond to instructions.

Can you help if I have a strong gag reflex?

Yes. A sensitive gag reflex can make dental treatment difficult. We use techniques to improve comfort, work at your pace and, when appropriate, discuss sedation options that can significantly reduce the gag reflex during treatment.

What treatments can be completed under sedation?

Many procedures can be performed comfortably with sedation, including:

  • Dental implants

  • Wisdom tooth removal

  • Tooth extractions

  • Crowns and bridges

  • Multiple fillings

  • Root canal treatment

  • TMJ treatment

  • Cosmetic dentistry

Your suitability will be assessed during your consultation.

Is IV sedation safe?

IV sedation is generally very safe when administered by a qualified sedationist. Before treatment, we review your medical history and medications to determine whether sedation is appropriate. Throughout your procedure, your vital signs are continuously monitored.

Will I remember my appointment after IV sedation?

Many patients remember very little of their treatment due to the relaxing and amnesic effects of IV sedation. While experiences vary, most patients report feeling that the appointment passed very quickly.

What happens after IV sedation?

Because the effects of sedation can last for several hours, you will need a responsible adult to accompany you home. You should avoid driving, operating machinery, making important decisions or consuming alcohol for the remainder of the day.

Can anxious children receive gentle dental care?

Yes. We understand that children can also feel nervous about visiting the dentist. We take a calm, gentle approach, explain procedures in an age-appropriate way and work to create positive dental experiences from an early age.

How do I know which comfort option is right for me?

Every patient is different. During your consultation, we'll discuss your dental concerns, previous experiences, medical history and treatment goals. Based on this assessment, we'll recommend the most appropriate approach to help you feel comfortable throughout your care.

What is your first appointment like if I'm nervous?

Your first visit is designed to be relaxed and informative. We'll listen to your concerns, perform a thorough examination, discuss your treatment options and answer any questions you may have. There is no pressure to proceed with treatment on the same day unless you're comfortable doing so.
